 Little while back we had a look at the PING i15 iron set, and really loved the blend of forgiveness and workability in a form factor that is pleasing to the eye of the better golfer. Today we are going to have a look at PING‘s latest entry in the Super Game Improvement arena, the Ping G15 Irons. The PING G series of irons has been well respected for a number of years now, I still vividly remember the first time I picked up a G5 3 iron, my first swing launched the ball into the stratosphere and seemed to carry on forever. I had a brief love affair with the G10 irons and over the past few months have been trying to decide if the latest Ping G15 Irons could kick the i15 irons out of my bag.

Company line: "The club's 'floating' Custom Tuning Port (CTP) moves more mass to the perimeter and increases MOI. Weight removed from the thin, light clubface is redistributed to the toe for added forgiveness. A wider sole contributes to higher launching shots. Stronger lofts (and the low, deep center of gravity) should lead to longer shots."

Our Testers say:

The length of the clubs/irons differ from iron to iron: PW comes in at 35 ½ inches; 9 iron 35.75 inches; 8 iron 36.25 inches; 7 iron 36.75 inches; 6 iron 37.25 inches; 5 iron 37.75 inches; 4 iron 38.25 inches; and 3 iron 38.75 inches. Those are of course standard lengths of un-customized/non custom fitted clubs.

G15 Irons Discussions

The Ping G15 Irons are a fairly new addition to the iron market, being an update of their G10 predecessors. They are designed mainly to be a game improvement club that's easy to hit, and very forgiving.

Like its predecessor, the Ping G15 Irons is an oversized iron designed for players seeking maximum forgiveness. However, several changes have been made which PING believes should make the club even more forgiving.

The epicenter of the Ping G15 Irons technological advances is the new Custom Tuning Port ("CTP"). While the G10 had a CTP, PING engineers reshaped and repositioned the CTP to save seven grams. The weight savings of a thinner face allowed the engineers move weight to the perimeter - particularly the toe - to improve forgiveness for off-center hits as well as increase MOI. PING believes that these changes provide the proper structure and support to ensure distance control and solid feel.

It really is very difficult to send an approach shot offline with these clubs, whether it's a good swing or a bad swing that you've made.
With regards to distance, we found that the Ping G15 Irons were far superior to the earlier G10s. While the G10 irons could quite often give you about 10 yards less than you'd expect in each club, even on decent strikes. The Ping G15 Irons seem to generally give about 10 yards more for each club instead.
The sound at impact when you catch the ball well is very crisp and solid, and it's not too bad when you don't catch the ball that well either. You just hardly ever get that horrible stingy feedback that some iron sets can give.

From 130 yards and in, even higher handicappers should become more confident playing approach shots with the Ping G15 Irons. Along with the fantastic accuracy, the Ping G15 Irons also help produce a reasonable amount of spin on the ball, similar to the G10s. So if you land the ball on the green with these irons, odds are it'll be a soft landing and you'll stay there.
To look at them as a whole, the new Ping G15 Irons from Ping quite simply are an exceptional addition to the market. In our opinion even good players could benefit from these Ping G15 Irons, not just mid to higher handicappers. These clubs are that good that we'd recommend the Ping G15 Irons to any player to try out.

G15 Irons, Classic Improvement Stick

If the G10 provides maximum forgiveness then what do you call an iron that provides even more forgiveness? PING calls it the G15.

At first glance they are nice looking irons, sporting slightly larger than normal club heads with some sharp graphics. The Ping G15 Irons would definitely look good sitting in your bag at a Sunday morning medal.
When first holding the clubs though, Ping G15 Irons definitely feel a bit heavier than most other Ping irons. However it really only takes a few practice swings to get used to the weight, and get a feel for the Ping G15 Irons.
As mentioned these irons were made to be easy to hit, and they do certainly deliver. The Ping G15 Irons can get the golf ball away consistently with such little effort, and you don't need to make that great a swing in order to get a decent shot.
And this was generally the case right the way through the set. Even the longer irons shouldn't pose too much difficulty for most players. However there is an alternative there in the form of the G15 hybrids, which are available for the golfers who are perhaps intimidated by trying to hit long irons.
In terms of forgiveness, the performance of the P Ping G15 Irons was very impressive. Off the fairway the clubs were so accurate, and the golf ball always held its line very well once airborne. Anyone who has trouble hitting enough greens in regulation could certainly see some benefit in using these irons.

Ping G15 Technology

The Ping G15 Driver is engineered for golfers seeking a maximum forgiveness driver that delivers distance and accuracy. Its 460cc titanium head is longer front to back and features Ping’s patented ultra thin crown technology. Weight savings from the thin crown are positioned as an external sole weight to optimize the center of gravity for higher trajectories and reduced spin.

This is an interesting piece of golf equipment. Why? At the first glance the Ping G15 Driver appears to be a traditionally shaped, large head driver of 460cc. However, upon closer inspection one can make out the triangular geometry of the discount golf club head. The club head of Ping G15 Driver is finished in a dark color that is very subtle and does not distract you at address or during your swing. The crown of the club is set with the trademark ping alignment aid, a reversed crescent moon. Again, nothing distracting about this, the alignment aid is a dark gray that does not stand out significantly, just enough that you can easily align the ball and club face.

For those of you who are bothered by offset and draw bias in a discount golf club, you will be happy to know that the Ping G15 Driverup pretty neutral and looks quite square at address. There is a draw bias version of the Ping G15 Driver for those of you looking to help ease a slice. That particular model offers up a slightly more pronounced offset. The standard G15 Driver, on the other hand, will look quite pleasing to a golfer who naturally hits a draw. No worries about having to hold off the release to avoid those big hooks!

"The Ping G15 Driver is very similar to the previous G10 driver. It features a mid to high launch tendency due to the weight distribution in the head. Word from the course has it that loft/shaft combinations need to be watched carefully because of the higher flight tendancies. The 460 head still provides a good measure of forgiveness, and with the correct shaft match for swing dynamics, distance is excellent. Toe and heel mishits gear back well, sound is pleasing, not harsh like some Clevelands and Cobras, but solid sounding. Compares very well with Titleist 909 D2 series, Callaway FT-9, and Taylor Made R9 460, the only negative is Ping G15 Driver does produce higher spin rates which have a negative impact on overall distance. That's where shafting helps out. Pricing is not over the top, and the Ping G15 Driver is a good driver for any player."
