Poker - Is Poker Gambling?

As I mentioned in my last post, I have some friends and family that think poker is like heroin - starts off great but soon you're addicted and up to your eyeballs in debt.

Of course, we all know it isn't like that. There are countless arguments on the web, all trying desperately to decide whether everyone should join the gambler's anonymous or not. This is my take on it all.

* Poker = gambling

"Gambling is any behavior involving risking money or valuables on the outcome of a game, contest, or other event in which the outcome of that activity depends partially or totally upon chance or upon one's ability to do something." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambling)

So technically, poker counts as gambling. Assuming of course, that tournament chips have some value. Tournament chips don't have monetary value - only your finishing position does. But, given that (generally) more chips means a higher finishing position, chips do have an implied value, since the point of the game is to gain more of them in order to finish higher.

* But gambling does not = debt

But is gambling a terrible thing? As I see it, no. People often say - "it's addictive, you'll lose all your money", but this argument is analogous to the one about guns - "guns don't kill people, people kill people". It's not gambling that puts you in debt, it's the person doing the gambling. Any activity that involves spending your money can put you in debt. Properly managed (as with all financial affairs), gambling is perfectly safe.

All decent players, from amateur to pro, will tell you that bankroll (the stash of money a player uses for poker) management is paramount to success. There's no sense betting all your money in one go, since there is always a chance you'll lose (as in any form of gambling). Instead, risk small portions of your bankroll, so as to give your skillful edge plenty of time to come into effect - over the long run.

As for addiction.. how many substances are in everyday use that are incredibly addictive? Alcohol? Nicotine? What if every time you treated yourself to a glass of wine, all your friends jumped up and started preaching about the dangers of alcoholism and addiction? You'd say - "pah, go away and stop being silly", and you'd be entirely right. Gambling is no different.

I've heard some people say, "but gambling is immoral, and a silly thing to spend your dosh on". Why? I can spend £10 down the pub or at the cinema in a couple of hours, or I can spend the same amount on a game of cards. I'd probably enjoy them both about as much, and with poker I have the added bonus of being able to win my money back = free entertainment!

* But how can you win? It's all luck, right?

This is a different argument - whether poker is a game of skill or not. Once you accept that poker is gambling, you can get on with explaining why it's a hundred times better than BlackJack, Roulette, Craps or any other standard casino game.

With most casino games (like those listed above), you are playing against the house. The odds are mathematically balanced in the house's favour (they have to make money somehow). If you played for 1000 years, you would lose - not a lot, but you would lose.

Poker allows you to manipulate the odds in your favour, through your betting and psychological warfare. You're not playing against the house, but actually against other players. With the odds in your favour, play for 1000 years and you'll come out on top.

A skillful player has an "edge" over other players, since in the long run he is more likely to come out on top, since he is better at manipulating the odds. For example..

Say you hold 2 spades, and you need another to make a 5 card flush and a winning hand, and there are 2 cards to come. The chances of you hitting the spade on the next card is about 4-1, but over the next 2 cards is about 2-1.

If there is $100 in the pot, and it costs you $20 to call, you're getting $100-$20 or 5-1 odds. This means, over the course of 10 times of playing this hand and calling the bet you'll miss the spade 4 times (losing 4x$20 = $80), and hit the winning spade once (earning 1x$100 = $100), giving you an overall profit of $20.

Regardless of the outcome of each individual hand, continue making these sorts of bets and you will profit in the long run because your odds are good. If you know your opponent is drawing to that flush, you can bet $50 instead of $20, reducing his odds to $100-$50 or 2-1. Now, he will miss and 4x$50 = $200 loss, and win 1x$100 = $100 gain, giving an overall loss of $100.

Even if your opponent calls and wins in this case, it was still not a good play. He will still lose money in the long run, and you should always be happy he does call - it's players like him that provide the profit to be made!

This basic example clearly shows how poker is a gambling game, but a well calculated and mathematically sound gamble, which will show profit in the long run. This cannot be said about other casino games, the lottery, horse and dog racing and almost every other form of gambling, since they all play against the house (or bookie), and not against other players.

In poker, YOU are acting as the house, offering odds on the hand through your bets. It is up to good players to bend these odds in their favour, as shown above.

Of course, we still haven't mentioned the psychological side to poker. Bluffing, tells, reading your opponent and so on. All these skills will improve a players odds of winning, or the value of the bets they make. These skills are much harder to quantify, but they do exist. If you can force your opponent to fold through your betting, you win - regardless of the cards you have. Knowing when to bluff is an artform.

* Conclusion

Poker is gambling. Gambling is not a bad thing. Poker is a skillful game, and good players have a mathematical and psychological edge over poor players. Poker is a battle, with each tournament being a skirmish, and each hand being a tossing of insulting words between opponents. It's all about the long run, and proper money management.

If a player cannot manage his money, cannot play well and so loses all his money - that's HIS fault, not the fault of the game. Above all, it's supposed to be fun, just like any other hobby, interest or even profession.

Dog - How To Crate Train Your Dog

Make sure your puppy's or dog's collar is off while he is in a crate
as this could be terribly dangerous. Your dog could get her collar

caught in the crate, leading to a dire situation. And make sure the
crate isn't ever in direct sunlight, or placed near a vent or
radiator. Your puppy ought to be as comfortable as possible in her crate
for suitable training and safety.

1. Toys in the Crate: Placing toys in the crate for your puppy's enjoymentis a good approach to keep her from becoming bored or lonely. A
Nylabone or other fun toy can provide instant gratification.

2. Crating At Night: When you go to bed, always crate your puppy. A
puppy should never be given unsupervised access to your home when you

sleep. You might be alarmed when you awake with the destruction she has
done. Here's an addition hint that will help: lay a tarp under the crate. If your
puppy eliminates inside the crate, it might drip onto the floor. This
safeguards your flooring or carpeting in the future, or security deposit if you
are renting.

3. No Room for a Crate? If you have absolutely no room to put a crate, you
ought to then bind your puppy to the bedpost or to an eye hook in the
baseboard close to your bed at night. Provide just enough lead to turn around
and lie down. You don't want the lead to be too long where he
will frolic about in your bedroom. If you're renting an apartment, be
positive you have your landlords consent to screw an eye hook into the
base-board. This will make your landlord feel better about renting to dog
owners since several aren't thrilled with having dog owners as tenants. Additionally, place cushy
bedding onto the ground if she is to sleep tied to your bed.

4. When and if Your Puppy Cries at Night: For the first few weeks, your
puppy will not be able to sleep through the whole night. Plenty of pups cry during the night because they need to potty. When
your puppy starts to cry, take him out straight off so he will do his business.
When he's finished, amuse him for a short while or so and place him back in the
crate.

Your puppy has to realize that he is being taken out of the crate during the night to go potty and not to goof off. If he's still whimpering after takinghim out and if you are positive isn't suffering from diarrhea, resist
the urge to let him out to play with you. If you do, you are
developing a pattern where the puppy can decide when he is able to come out
and you'll regret it later.

Dog - Possible Problems With Adopted Dogs

Most shelter dogs arrive with a few behavior issues, and
those that don't will sometimes develop a few out of sheer ingenuity. And the

anxiety of changing to a whole new house and a whole new family is
extremely likely to create new undesirable habits or intensify old ones.

Remain calm, and don't take it personally; your dog certainly isn't doing
anything abnormal, uncorrectable, or spiteful. She's not misbehaving out of
spite, so don't correct her in resentment; your goal is to put a stop to her unfavorable
behavior calmly and authoritatively, not to get revenge. Keep in mind, she may
never have had to abide by anyone's guidelines previously, but that doesn't imply
she won't want to understand yours.

We've shown some of the more common doggie problems here, but some
important standards apply to all of them:

1. A little prevention goes a long way. If you know your dog likes to chew up your tennis shoes
or dig in your plants, don't leave your things where she can
reach them just yet. If she only causes trouble when she's left alone, don't leave her unsupervised until she's trustworthy. Simply put, prevent as many situations for her to misbehaved during these early
weeks. But don't go overboard and leave her in her crate all day either;
that's certainly not fair to her, and besides, she'll never learn if she's not
allowed to make mistakes.

2. Be consistent at all costs. Set rules, and abide by them. Correct
your dog every time she errs, not only when you feel like it (and not just
when you happen to catch her - which means it is critical for you to look after her
every move constantly in the beginning). And gather the family together to be sure that everyone in the house is correcting the same behaviors in
the exact same manner; don't let anybody try to be the "nice one" by not correcting your dog's unwanted behaviors. That won't earn anybody points; it
will just create a very confused and unhappy pet.

3. Catch her in the act, or don't catch her at all. The same as with
potty training, you need to correct an error as it's happening, not two minutes or
seven hours after. You can punish your dog if you catch her chewing on your
boots but not if you find your boots already massacred on the
floor and can't see your dog anywhere around. If you don't make the correction right away,
she'll have many terrific memories of chewing on your belongings and no clue that
your anger has anything to do with it. She'll simply think you are a crazy person who gets angry for no reason, and learn to fear you. Guess what that means? Yes.
Supervision.

Entrapment isn't against the law when training your dog. Let's say you're having some problems
catching your dog in the act of stealing eatables from your counters. Why
not set her up? Put some tempting tidbit where she can see it, and
be ready to correct her with your shake can or spray bottle and your
sharp voice when she gives in a goes for the goods. Cheating? Possibly - but it's effective.
Don't forget to give her rewards when she's good. You don't want to be a
naysayer all the time; if you've corrected her for digging in the garden, then praise her when you notice her resisting
the temptation to do so.

Thoroughbred Horse Racing - The 1920S: Thoroughbred Racing'S Golden Age

As with the baseball stars of that era - Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth - the names of the greatest horses of the Roaring Decade are with us still, decades after most of those who witnessed their glory are dead. Who hasn't heard of Man O'War? In an iconic decade, great race horses became icons, and icons they remain.

Exterminator
1922's Horse of the Year was originally intended as a mere workout partner for rival Sun Briar. Willis Sharpe Kilmer, who bought Exterminator prior to his three-year season, thought that he'd been taken for a ride when his trainer Henry McDaniel paid far more than authorized for the chestnut-colored gelding. But there was a problem: Exterminator kept matching Sun Briar, a champion juvenile horse, speed for speed in workouts. The horse also seemed to have an instinctive understanding of race strategy - speeding up when necessary, holding back when McDaniel told him to. So when Sun Briar developed ringbone, McDaniel encouraged Kilmer to enter his understudy in the upcoming Kentucky Derby. At first Kilmer rejected the plan, until the President of Churchill Downs, who had seen Exterminator's workouts, intervened.

Suddenly the inexperienced, underraced Exterminator found himself facing a particularly muddy Derby morning. But his furious final kick brought him from the back of the pack, where he'd waited comfortably through the race, biding his time, to the font, where he won by a length.

He continued to mature, racing up to the unusual age of nine and beating horses who had, in prior years, outraced him. In all, he took 33 stakes wins - a record not beaten by any North American Thoroughbred.

Mad Hatter & Mad Play
Though they tend to be overshadowed by more-famous half-brother Man O'War, these brother Thoroughbreds - both sired by Man O'War's father Fair Play on mare Mad Cap - took top honors in important races during the early 1920s.

During his two-year season, elder brother Mad Hatter took the Bellerose Stakes, while acquiring a reputation as a temperamental, occasionally cranky horse, best understood by jockey Earl Sande. After his third-year-season loss to Sir Barton at the Maryland Handicap race, these two horses contracted a rivalry, which added sweetness to Mad Hatter's Pimlico victory over Sir Barton. But it was as a mature racing Thoroughbred that Mad Hatter really shone, winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup and continuing to win stakes races throughout the early twenties.

Mad Play, the younger of the two brothers (foaled in 1921), also benefited from the expert riding of the great Earl Sande. His three-year season saw impressive third places in the Preakness Stakes, but at Belmont (the final Triple Crown event) he earned lasting fame, beating his closest rival by one and a half lengths. Both horses were found, after retirement, to be sterile, thus ending the possibility of a Mad dynasty.

Man O'War
Was Man O'War (1917-1947), as many have argued, the greatest Thoroughbred racehorse of all time? It depends on the criteria you use. Consistency? (Man O'War won 9 of 10 races in his two-year season. His sole loss came at the Sanford Memorial Stakes, where his jockey failed to get him turned around at the start in this race from the era before starting gates, and in which he was boxed in at least three times, and still took second.

The following year he won every race in which he ran, yielding a 20-1 record.) Blazing speed? (He set several world and American records.) Competitive will? (See that 20-1 record again.) Overall effect on the sport? (Man O'War sired 64 stakes winners, despite complaints from horse buffs that he was matched with inferior mares. He was also Seabiscuit's grandfather.)

No matter how one judges, it's difficult to argue too much with Blood Horse magazine's declaration, in their list of the top 100 US Thoroughbred champions of the 20th century, that Man O'War belonged in the top spot on that list.

Judo Technique - Presenting Your Judo Skills In Public

If you have a Judo Club which becomes known in your district, you will very probably be asked to give short public displays, in connection with sporting events, garden parties, and so on. It is quite useful to do this, as it provides good publicity for your club, and may bring in other members, even when there is no financial reward. Some clubs like to hire a local hall, and put on a display themselves, as a means of raising funds for the club, and gaining publicity. Indeed, such a display might even become an annual event in your town.

I shall therefore say something about the organization of displays, and give a specimen program, which has been tried out in practice by my own club.

The first thing to decide in the case of a display is how long it is to last. If you are putting on a show for the organizer of some local event, make certain of this to begin with. It is usually twenty minutes to half an hour that is required, if the demonstration is to form part of a programmer.

Then plan the time you are allotted to show something of each of the aspects of Judo, i.e., Break falling, Throwing, Groundwork, and Self-Defense, and let one item follow the next in some logical sequence that will give unity to your show.

If you jump haphazardly from one thing to another, you may have a succession of brilliant acts, but you haven't got a show. Unity is the keyword in production.

It is best to appoint your most capable member to plan it, and then accept his decisions. If you can, appoint a Commentator who knows something about Judo, so that if a mistake is made, he is not all at sea, as a result. I have seen a show, in which the commentator fell behind the performers, so that for each throw he named they did the next, and he was left with one over at the end.

The following is a suggested thirty-minute routine with the theme that it illustrates what a student has to learn.

Thirty-minute Display

Item No. Time in Minutes

1. Breakfalls (7) 2
2. Hip Throws (8) 3
3. Leg Throws (8) 3
4. Hand and Shoulder Throws (8) 3
5. Sacrifice Throws (8) 3
6. Holdings (8) 3
7. Arm locks (8) 3
8. Strangleholds (8) 3
9. Self-Defense (15 movements) 4
10. Randori or free practice between one or more pairs 3

It is possible to increase or decrease the length of the programmer slightly by varying the number of throws demonstrated in each section. Throws can, if desired, be demonstrated twice, the first time slowly so that the commentator can explain it to the audience, and the second time quickly as the throw is normally done.

It is not advisable to have too much Randori, which tends to become boring to an audience who have not seen Judo, since they cannot appreciate what the contestants are trying to do. Contests are even more boring, unless there is interest from some other point of view, e.g., an Inter-Club event, or inter-town contest. Self-Defense is the most popular item with an audience, and if you have a lady member who can do it with a male attacker, your show is assured of success. Children are also popular with an audience, particularly if they are seen to throw adults.

The aim of a display should be educational, to show the audience something of what Judo really is, and not just to amuse them, but if it is entertaining as well, it is more likely to succeed in its object.

Blackcatmining Key Code - Recreational Use Of Swimming Pools

The Parks and Recreation Committees are responsible for the maintenance and care of all swimming pools that are used by the public during the summer months. The cost for the use of these pools is relatively low and the fee charged is usually under $5 per person. Children under the age of 3 are allowed to swim if they are accompanied by an adult.

Public swimming pools are the best bargains around and are meant to be used by families to allow them a chance to get closer and spend more time together doing things that are fun. The typical depth of a public swimming pool is five feet, but some cities have created public pools with deep ends that reach 9 feet so that children have the opportunity to train for swimming competitions in their local neighborhood.

Public pools are rarely used for swimming competitions because this would create a conflict of interest. Swimming meets will usually use private pools that are in neighborhoods but are funded by the revenues that are charged for membership fees. This type of swimming meet will be a "For Profit" event that will also reward swimmers with awards at the end of the summer.

The Parks and Recreation Department of the City government is expected to perform maintenance on the public pools on a regular basis. The city will pay for all chemicals that are used in the pool water and will typically hire a pool cleaner and keep them on the payroll in a temporary position that runs concurrently of the summer swimming season.

All public swimming pools will have wired gates installed around them as a security measure to keep young children from falling in. City Fathers will usually post the rules and regulations of the pools in plain sight so that the public will know that they are swimming at their own risk each time they enter the pool area. A lifeguard will be on station during regular pool hours throughout the summer months. All other times, the public is expected to use their own judgment when using the public pools.

A public pool will be constructed of plain concrete which will include a drainage system that is adequate enough to maintain the cleanliness of the pool during the summer months. A public swimming pool will not be afforded niceties like pool cleaners that float on the pool surface when water is present because the chance of theft of this equipment is too great and city managers are not willing to take the risk.

One of the primary concerns of the public health departments is to ensure that all public pools are operated within set safety standards. There are strict regulations to be followed that deal with the number of swimmer's allowed in the pool area at one time, and the regulations serve as a guide as to how often the pool will be cleaned. The regulations might state that the pools will be cleared of leaves, dirt, and debris on a regular basis, and the local health department will test the water regularly to ensure that no harmful bacteria is present.

Other records

It is noteworthy that National Amateur championships were counted as majors at the time. Jones's actual major total using the standard in place in his lifetime was 13.

Other records
Jones's four titles in the U.S. Open remain tied for the most ever in that championship, along with Willie Anderson, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus. His four second-place finishes in the U.S. Open also tied a record, along with Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Phil Mickelson until 2009 when Mickelson recorded his fifth second-place finish. His five titles in the U.S. Amateur are a record. Jones was ranked as the fourth greatest golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine in 2000. Jack Nicklaus was first, Ben Hogan second, and Sam Snead third. Jones was ranked as the third greatest golfer of all time in a major survey published by Golf Magazine, September 2009. Jack Nicklaus was ranked first, and Tiger Woods was ranked second, with Ben Hogan fourth and Sam Snead fifth.

Films
Jones appeared in a series of short instructional films produced by Warner Brothers in 1931 titled How I Play Golf, by Bobby Jones (12 films) and in 1933 titled How to Break 90 (6 films). Actors and actresses, mostly under contract with Warner Brothers, but also from other studios, volunteered to appear in these 18 episodes. Some of the more well known actors to appear in the instructional plots included James Cagney, Joe E. Brown, Edward G. Robinson, W.C. Fields, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Richard Barthelmess, Richard Arlen, Guy Kibbee, Warner Oland and Loretta Young. Various scenarios involving the actors were used to provide an opportunity for Jones to convey a lesson about a particular part of the game. The shorts were directed by the prolific George Marshall.

Jones was the subject of the quasi-biographical 2004 feature film Bobby Jones: A Stroke of Genius in which he was portrayed by James Caviezel. The film was a major box office flop, grossing only $1.2 million the first weekend and $2.7 million overall, against a production cost of over $17 million. The film was also littered with historical inaccuracies. The Jones legend was also used to create a supporting character in The Legend of Bagger Vance in 2000, portrayed by Joel Gretsch, and the event where he called his own penalty is used for the main character, Rannulph Junuh.

Books
Jones authored several books on golf including Down the Fairway with O.B. Keeler (1927), The Rights and Wrongs of Golf (1933), Golf Is My Game (1959), Bobby Jones on Golf (1966), and Bobby Jones on the Basic Golf Swing (1968) with illustrator Anthony Ravielli. The 300-copy limited edition of "Down The Fairway" is considered one of the rarest and most sought after golf books by collectors.

Jones has been the subject of several books, most notably The Bobby Jones Story and A Boy's Life of Bobby Jones, both by O.B. Keeler. Other notable texts are The Life and Times of Bobby Jones: Portrait of a Gentleman by Sidney L. Matthew, The Greatest Player Who Never Lived by J. Michael Veron, and Triumphant Journey: The Saga of Bobby Jones and The Grand Slam of Golf by Richard Miller. Published in 2006, "The Grand Slam" by Mark Frost has received much note as being evocative of Jones's life and times.

A special room is dedicated to Jones's life and accomplishments at the United States Golf Association Museum and Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History in Far Hills, New Jersey.

Bobby Jones Golf Company
Founded in 2003, the Bobby Jones Golf Company designs, develops, and sells metal-woods, wedges and hybrid golf clubs. The company has an exclusive, worldwide license agreement with the family of Bobby Jones (known as Jonesheirs, Inc.) and the Hartmarx Corporation for the use of the Bobby Jones name for golf equipment and golf accessories. The craftsman is Jesse Ortiz

St Andrews, Scotland

St Andrews, Scotland
Jones had a unique relationship with the town of St Andrews, Scotland. On his first appearance on the Old Course in The Open Championship of 1921, he withdrew after 11 holes in the third round. He firmly stated his dislike for the Old Course and the town reciprocated, saying in the press, "Master Bobby is just a boy, and an ordinary boy at that." Later, he came to love the Old Course and the town like few others. When he won the Open at the Old Course in 1927, he wowed the crowd by asking that the trophy remain with his friends at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club rather than return with him to Atlanta. In 1958, he was named a Freeman of the City of St Andrews, becoming only the second American to be so honored, the other being Benjamin Franklin in 1759. Today, a scholarship exchange bearing the Jones name exists between the University of St Andrews and both Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. At Emory, four students are sent to St Andrews for an all-expenses-paid year of study and travel. In return, Emory accepts four students from St Andrews each year. The program, the Robert T. Jones Scholarship, is among the most prestigious scholarships offered by any university.

University, family, career
Jones's grave in Oakland Cemetery with putting green, golf balls, and mementos. Jones was successful outside of golf as well. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1922, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and played for the golf team. He then earned a B.A. in English Literature from Harvard College in 1924, where he was a member of the Owl Club. After only one year in law school at Emory University, he passed the Georgia bar exam. While attending Emory University, Jones became a member of Phi Delta Phi.

Jones was married in 1924 to the former Mary Rice Malone. They had three children, Clara, Robert Tyre III, and Mary Ellen. When he retired from golf at age 28, he concentrated on his Atlanta law practice. That same year, 1930, he was honored with the first James E. Sullivan Award, awarded annually by the Amateur Athletic Union to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.

Golf films, golf club design
In addition, he made 18 instructional golf films in Hollywood, where he coached well-known stars with golf pointers. The films were very popular, and Jones gave up his amateur status while earning lucrative contract moneys in this venture. Jones worked with A.G. Spalding & Co. to develop the first set of matched clubs in the early 1930s; the clubs sold very well and are still considered among the best-designed sets ever made.

Augusta National
Jones co-designed the Augusta National course with Alister MacKenzie, and founded the Masters Tournament, first played at Augusta in March 1934. The new tournament was an immediate success.

War years
During World War II, Jones served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During the war, Jones permitted the U.S. Army to graze cattle on the grounds at Augusta National. Later, in 1947, he founded Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta and co-designed the course with Robert Trent Jones.

Masters Tournament, health worries
Jones did play in the Masters every year it was held until 1948, when he was 46 years old. By then, his health had declined to the stage where this was no longer possible. But with his health difficulties, and being past his prime and not competing elsewhere to stay in tournament form, he never truly contended to win the Masters, although his scores were usually respectable. These were largely ceremonial performances, since his main duty was as host of the event. His extraordinary popularity, efforts with the course design, and tournament organization boosted the profile of the Masters significantly. The tournament, jointly run by Jones and Clifford Roberts, made many important innovations which became the norm elsewhere, such as gallery ropes to control the flow of the large crowds, many scoreboards around the course, the use of red / green numbers on those scoreboards to denote under / over par scores, an international field of top players, high-caliber television coverage, and week-long admission passes for patrons, which became extremely hard to obtain. The tournament also sought and welcomed feedback from players, fans, and writers, leading to continual improvement over the years. The Masters gradually evolved to being one of the most respected tournaments in the world, one of the four major championships.

Incapacity and death
In 1948, Jones was diagnosed with syringomyelia, a fluid-filled cavity in his spinal cord which caused first pain, then paralysis. He was eventually restricted to a wheelchair. He died in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 18, 1971, about a week after converting to Catholicism. Jones was baptized on his death bed by Monsignor John D. Stapleton, pastor of the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta, the church attended by the Jones family and was buried in Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Sportsmanship

Trivia
Snead was referenced in several jokes in the Peanuts comic strip in the 1950s and 1960s. Linus van Pelt has claimed to "have always kind of admired him", and Schroeder bragged that he was "going to be the Sam Snead of music!"
Snead hit the Wrigley Field scoreboard with a golf ball teed off from home plate.
Snead once appeared in an episode of The Phil Silvers Show (Sergeant Bilko).
In 1987, Snead appeared opposite Tim Conway in Dorf's Golf Bible. Despite Snead's efforts, Dorf cannot follow through on even the simplest of Snead's instructions, prompting Snead's repeated pleas of "why don't you quit?"
According to an edition of the Book of Sports Lists, Snead made a commercial for Bromo-Seltzer in which he said, "On the day of atonement, I cannot afford to be sick." It was a while before the Jewish audience realized Sammy was not referring to Yom Kippur, but "could not pronounce 'tournament' like other white folk."
Snead was so flexible and coordinated that for most of his adult life, he was able to stand on one foot and kick the other foot high enough to touch the top of a seven-foot high door frame without losing his balance.

Bobby Jones

Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones Jr. (March 17, 1902 ‚œ December 18, 1971) was arguably the most famous amateur golfer ever to compete on a national and international level. He earned his living mainly as an attorney and participated only as an amateur, primarily on a part-time basis, and chose to retire from competition at age 28, though he would indirectly profit from golf later as an instructor and designer.

Explaining his decision to retire, Jones said, "It (championships) is something like a cage. First you are expected to get into it and then you are expected to stay there. But of course, nobody can stay there."

Jones is most famous for his unique "Grand Slam," consisting of his victory in all four major golf tournaments of his era (the open and amateur championships in both the U.S. & Britain) in a single calendar year (1930).

Early years
Jones was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He battled health issues as a young boy, and golf was prescribed to strengthen him. Encouraged by his father, Jones loved golf from the start. He evolved into a child prodigy, who won his first children's tournament at the age of six, and made the third round of the U.S. Amateur Championship at 14. That same year, 1916, he won the Georgia State Amateur Championship for his first important title at Capital City Club located in Brookhaven, where he became an active member later in life.

He was trained and coached by club professional Stewart Maiden, a native of Carnoustie, Scotland. Maiden was the professional at the Atlanta Athletic Club's East Lake Golf Club, who also trained the somewhat older Alexa Stirling, also a prodigy, at East Lake around the same time. Jones played frequently with his father, Col. Robert P. Jones, a skilled player himself. The younger Jones sometimes battled his own temper on the course, but later cured this problem as he became more experienced. Jones toured the U.S. during World War I from 1917‚œ18, playing exhibition matches before large crowds, often with Alexa Stirling, to generate income for war relief. Playing in front of such crowds in these matches helped him, as he moved into national competition a bit later on.

Jones successfully represented the United States in two winning international team matches against Canada, in 1919 and 1920, earning three of a possible four points in foursomes and singles play. In 1919 he travelled to Hamilton Golf and Country Club, for his first serious competitive action outside the U.S., while in 1920, Engineers' G.C., in Roslyn, Long Island hosted the matches. Still a teenager, he was by far the youngest player in the series. Jones also played in the 1919 Canadian Open while in Hamilton, Ontario, performing very well to place tied for second, but 16 shots behind winner J. Douglas Edgar. Jones qualified for his first U.S. Open at age 18 in 1920, and was paired with the legendary Harry Vardon for the first two rounds. He won the Southern Amateur three times, 1917, 1920, and 1922.

First majors
As an adult, he hit his stride in 1923, when he won his first U.S. Open. From that win at New York's Inwood Country Club, through his 1930 victory in the U.S. Amateur, he won 13 major championships (as they were counted at the time) in 20 attempts. Jones was the first player to win The Double, both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship in the same year (1926). He is still the only player ever to have won the Grand Slam, or all four major championships, in the same year (1930). He represented the United States in the Walker Cup five times, winning nine of his 10 matches. He also won two other tournaments against professionals: the 1927 Southern Open and the 1930 Southeastern Open. Jones was a life-long member of the Atlanta Athletic Club (at the club's original site, now the East Lake Golf Club), and the Capital City Club in Atlanta.

Jones is considered one of the five giants of the 1920s American sports scene, along with baseball's Babe Ruth, boxing's Jack Dempsey, football's Red Grange, and tennis player Bill Tilden. He was the first recipient of the AAU's Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. He is the only sports figure to receive two ticker-tape parades in New York City, the first in 1926 and the second in 1930. Jones is memorialized in Augusta, Georgia at the Golf Gardens and has the Bobby Jones Expressway, also known as Interstate 520, named for him.

Sportsmanship
Jones was not only a consummately skilled golfer but exemplified the principles of sportsmanship and fair play. Early in his amateur career, he was in the final playoff of the 1925 U.S. Open at the Worcester Country Club. During the match, his ball ended up in the rough just off the fairway, and as he was setting up to play his shot, his iron caused a slight movement of the ball. He immediately got angry with himself, turned to the marshals, and called a penalty on himself. The marshals discussed among themselves and questioned some of the gallery whether they had seen Jones's ball move. Their decision was that neither they nor anyone else had witnessed any incident, so the decision was left to Jones. Bobby Jones called the two-stroke penalty on himself, not knowing that he would lose the tournament by one stroke. When he was praised for his gesture, Jones replied, "You may as well praise a man for not robbing a bank." The USGA's sportsmanship award is named the Bob Jones Award in his honor.

Sam Snead

Sam Snead

Samuel Jackson Snead (May 27, 1912 ‚œ May 23, 2002) was an American professional golfer who was one of the top players in the world for most of four decades. He and two of the other greatest golfers of all time, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, were born within six months of each other in 1912. Snead won a record 82 PGA Tour events.

Snead won seven majors: three Masters, three PGA Championships and one British Open. But his reputation has always been slightly tarnished by his failure to win a U.S. Open. Snead used to share the record for most second-place finishes in that championship (four) with four others; Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Phil Mickelson. After the 2009 U.S. Open, Mickelson became the all-time leader with five second place finishes.

Snead's nickname was "Slammin' Sammy." He was admired by many for having the so-called "perfect swing," and generated many imitators. Snead was famed for his folksy image, wearing a straw hat, playing tournaments barefoot, and making such statements as "Keep close count of your nickels and dimes, stay away from whiskey, and never concede a putt. "He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, and received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

Personal
Snead was born in Ashwood, Virginia near Hot Springs, Virginia. At the age of seven, he began caddying at The Homestead in Hot Springs; he worked as an assistant pro at The Homestead at 19, and turned professional in 1934. In 1944 he became head pro at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Snead maintained ties to Hot Springs and The Homestead for all of his life.

Death
Sam Snead died in Hot Springs in 2002 following complications from a stroke four days short of his 90th birthday. He was survived by two sons, Sam Jr., of Hot Springs, Virginia and Terry, of Mountain Grove, Virginia; a brother, Pete, of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren. His wife, Audrey, died in 1990. His nephew J. C. Snead was also a PGA Tour golfer.

Career
In 1937, Snead's first year on the Tour, he won five events, including the Oakland Open at Claremont Country Club in California.

In 1938, he first won the Greater Greensboro Open. He won that event a total of eight times, the Tour record, concluding in 1965 at the age of 52 years, & 311 days, making him the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event.

1939 was the first of several times he failed at crucial moments of the U.S. Open, the only major event he never won. Needing par to win, he posted an 8 on the 72nd hole. At the U.S. Open in 1949, Snead missed a 2 1/2-foot putt on the final playoff hole to lose to Lew Worsham.

In 1950, he won 11 events. No one has since won more in one year. He won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average four times: 1938, 1949, 1950, and 1955. He played on seven Ryder Cup teams: 1937, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955, and 1959, and captained the team in 1951, 1959, and 1969.

In 1971, he won the PGA Club Professional Championship.

In 1974, at age 62, he shot a one-under-par 279 to come in third, three strokes behind winner Lee Trevino at the PGA Championship at Tanglewood in Clemmons, North Carolina.

In 1978, he won the first Legends of Golf event, which was the impetus for the creation two years later of the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the Champions Tour.

In 1979 he was the youngest PGA Tour golfer to shoot his age (67) in the second round of the 1979 Quad Cities Open. He shot under his age (66) in the final round.

In 1983, at age 71, he shot a round of 60 (12-under-par) at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia.

In 1997, at age 85, he shot a round of 78 at the Old White course of The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

In 1998, he received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award, the fourth person to be so honored.

From 1984 to 2002, he hit the honorary starting tee shot at The Masters. Until 1999, he was joined by Gene Sarazen, and until 2001, by Byron Nelson.

Snead wrote several golf instructional books, and frequently wrote instructional columns in golf magazines.

In 2000, he was ranked the third greatest golfer of all time, in Golf Digest magazine's rankings. Jack Nicklaus was first, and Ben Hogan was second.

Snead was inducted into the West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame in 2009 with William C. Campbell.

Playing style
During his peak years, Snead was an exceptionally long driver, particularly into the wind, with very good accuracy as well. He was a superb player with the long irons. Snead was also known for a very creative short game, pioneering use of the sand wedge for short shots from grass. As he aged, his putting deteriorated. Snead pioneered croquet-style putting in the 1960s, where he straddled the ball with one leg on each side. The United States Golf Association banned this technique in 1968 by amending the old Rule 35-1, since until that time, golfers had always faced the ball when striking. Snead then went to side-saddle putting, where he crouched and angled his feet towards the hole, and held the club with a split grip. He used that style for the rest of his career.

No, he didn't: Woods credits self with Memorial win

Tiger Woods in the final round of the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open
ATLANTA – It’s official: Tiger Woods has won so many tournaments, so often, that he can’t even remember ’em all.

On Wednesday, Woods was asked to assess his season to date, which includes five victories on the PGA Tour.

“I won some big events this year,” he said during a news conference in advance of the Tour Championship. “Two World Golf Championships, a Players, and Jack and Arnold's tournaments.”

Well, he nailed four of the five.

Woods did indeed win the WGC-Cadillac Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational.

But unless Jack Nicklaus has started hosting his event at Torrey Pines without telling anyone, Woods’ memory is running at just 80 percent.

While he failed to mention his victory at the Farmers Insurance Open, Woods did take credit for winning The Memorial Tournament – hosted by Nicklaus, of course – where he actually finished in a share of 65th place.

Of course, his error can be chalked up to simple confusion based on his winning percentage at Muirfield Village. That’s because Woods owns five career Memorial titles, including last year’s edition of the event.

Stenson forced to switch drivers at East Lake

ATLANTA – Henrik Stenson will put a new driver into play this week.

Then again, he didn’t have much of a choice. He smashed the old one into two pieces at Conway Farms on Monday.

“We’ve got the new TaylorMade SLDR in the bag this week. It's not always something bad that doesn't have something good with it,” said the man at No. 2 on the FedEx Cup ranking. “I had a look at that driver at the Scottish Open, but didn't have time to test it, and then I had a quick session at Firestone, but I felt like I was in the middle of things. For whatever reason, I kind of had to get into testing a new driver.

Tour Championship: Articles, videos and photos

“It feels pretty good, and it creates less spin for me. It sounds like a commercial now, doesn't it? It's definitely a stronger ball flight into the wind, and I'm definitely a player with quite a lot of spin on my golf ball. So I think it could be a good switch.”

As for the implication that he had a switch in mind when he decapitated his previous driver, Stenson didn’t hesitate.

“Yeah, absolutely. That was the main focus,” he said. “Let's finish the old one off right here and now in front of everybody on 18. Perfect.”

Stenson dealing with painful tendonitis in left wrist

Henrik Stenson at the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
ATLANTA – At No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, Henrik Stenson enters the Tour Championship as one of five players with a chance to win the $10 million grand prize with a victory this week.

It won’t be easy, though, as he’s dealing with tendonitis in his left wrist that first flared up during last week’s BMW Championship.

“It's pretty painful,” he said Wednesday. “But hopefully, we can stick it out another four days and still play good.

Tour Championship: Articles, videos and photos

“It kind of started last week at BMW. I thought I'd slept funny on my hand on Saturday morning. It hasn't really been affecting my shots that much, but it's gradually getting more and more painful kind of overnight before I get going in the morning.

“So I'll try to rest it a little bit today and probably come out earlier tomorrow and do a bit more.”

Three weeks ago, Stenson won the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second of the four playoff events.

Hand injury likely career-ending for Oberholser

Arron Oberholser
Having battled a series of hand injuries in recent years, former PGA Tour winner Arron Oberholser is reportedly faced with the prospect of early retirement after his latest on-course setback.

"I'm almost positive my golf career is over," the 38-year-old told the San Francisco Chronicle. "The writing is kind of appearing on the wall, in neon."

Winner of the 2006 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Oberholser went on to tie for fourth at the 2007 PGA Championship, cracking the top 30 in the world ranking in the process. Since then, though, he's been derailed by a series of injury issues, making only four PGA Tour starts since 2009 while reportedly undergoing four different surgeries to treat his oft-injured left hand.

Oberholser had hoped to regain his PGA Tour card through the Web.com Tour Finals this year, and played his way into position through three rounds of the series' first event, shooting 66-68-68 to begin the Hotel Fitness Championship last month. His final-round 73 dropped him back to a tie for 18th, however, and Oberholser also reportedly re-aggravated the injury to his hand.

"It's not a good situation," explained Oberholser, who withdrew from the next two Finals events. "It bothers me even on day-to-day stuff, and it's never done that before. It's never hurt this many days in a row without playing."

Oberholser made two starts on the PGA Tour this season, missing the cut at both the Northern Trust Open and the Shell Houston Open, and served as a part-time analyst for Golf Channel before attempting his latest comeback. He added that long-term "quality of life" concerns played a role in his decision to essentially walk away from the game.

When unclogging a drain in the home, try to avoid using a chemical drain opening product. These products do help open a clogged drain, but the chemicals they contain may damage the body, and this is especially true if it gets on the skin. If you must use them, wear long sleeved shirts and gloves.

Clean your dryer's lint trap. This saves you from potential problems, including the prevention of fires. Regularly check your dryer's lint trap to see if it has any tears or holes that could potentially damage your dryer, and clog up your plumbing.

When you are going to clean fiberglass sinks and bathtubs, be sure that you use non-abrasive cleaners such as hand dish washing liquids and laundry detergents. These cleaners are much better for your plumbing as well, they do not have such bad chemicals.

To keep blockages from forming in your pipes, regularly clean them out with the proper tools or chemical cleaners. Pay particular attention to your toilet drain or any outdoor pipes that could be infiltrated by tree roots.

Pump your septic tank every five years to keep it working well. Having it cleaned out prevents the sediment from accumulating in the septic tank and creating a sewage backup in your house or triggering the meltdown of the entire septic system. There is a cost to having a company pump out your septic tank. But, a serious backup can cost a lot more if it mean replacing the tank.

Enzyme based pipe cleaners should be a first choice when you are trying to unclog a pipe that is blocked or draining slowly. Enzyme based cleaners work by using natural bacteria that turns the sludge clogged in your pipes into a liquid, allowing it to flow down the drain with ease. The enzyme cleaners are the best on the market.

If the drain stack for your washing machine overflows, try snaking it with a standard pipe snake. Occasionally, lint or other small items from the washing machine can build up in the pipe, causing it to clog or back up.

When trying to unclog drains, never use any chemical drain openers. Even though they might be successful in unclogging the drain, the harmful chemicals in these products can be damaging to your skin. Wear gloves and a long-sleeved shirt if you absolutely must use them.

It's key that you are educated before a problem happens. Routine maintenance on your home plumbing can prevent future problems from arising. Keep these tips handy so you'll be prepared for any future plumbing need.

How To Talk To College Girls On Campus

College is the best. Hot girls are everywhere, but if you don't know how to talk to college girls on campus, then it can feel really crappy. I know because I've been there. But I've figured a few things out that are true about all women, especially college chicks, when it comes to talking and flirting with them.

First, make the vibe about you and her. A lot of guys make it an "me vs. her" type interaction and that can really hurt your chances. I would remember reading the guru's stuff, and they'd say "tease, tease, tease", and so I'd do that. But the problem with that is that even though it gets a reaction from the girl, and can get her interested in you, if that's all you do and that's always the vibe of the conversation, then it's going to ultimately push the girl away.

Instead, when I was trying to figure out how to talk to college girls on campus I came across the idea of framing it as "me + her". In other words make a connection as soon as possible. An example of this is would be "Hey, you look like my future ex-wife." It's still kind of teasing, but much more playful and sets up that fram that you two were together already, creating a connection right off the bat.

If you're learning how to talk to college girls on campus then it's essential that you learn how to create and balance sexual tensionin your interactions (unless, of course you're trying to befriend all the cute girls, but I think you're looking for more than that, so it's important to push things towards the physical). This is what the teasing is for. Like I said earlier, you can over-tease, but if you don't tease at all (tease, or go against what most guys do; i.e. create tension) then your relationship is going to turn platonic and you are going to be placed immediately in the dreaded "friend zone". Don't let that happen to you.

One of the best ways to create tension, but also make sure it's not too much, causing her to push away, is to combine teasing and humor. Dating coach David DeAngelo called this "cocky funny humor"; others call it "push-pull". Whatever you label it, it works the same in every situation. You inject some sexual tension, maybe with a bold statement where you make fun of her star wars themed ringtone (IDK, just go with it, it's an example) "Really? You're such a dork!" But then you say it playfully, and add, "It's OK though, cause secretly I'm a star wars nerd too. I think we might be able to get along... as long as you don't go over the top and dress up in star wars outfits and talk about it in front of my friends." See how that is slightly teasing, but it also creates a connection of "you + her" and is funny too. Figuring out how to talk to college girls on campus is actually much simpler than most people make it out to be. Just be playful, tease, have fun, and create a connection between the two of you and you're set!

Maintaining level shoulders while rotating your the left is one of the keys to Shigeki Maryuama's outstanding ballstriking capabilities. A smaller player, he drives the ballwith muscle back irons as well as much bigger players like Ernie Els, who stands well over six feet. Maryuama keeps his left foot planted on the ground while his right knee kicks in slightly. This lets him leverage the right side of his body against a firm left side-a great way to generate power. He also keeps his shoulders level while his lower body rotates out of the way-producing quality ballstriking whether hitting a wood or an iron.

Know Your Swing

Jesper Parnevik is a different story. Unlike Maryuama, he's lean, lanky, and flexible. In fact, he's so much so that his hips often clear his upper body too quickly. Since Jesper also uses a strong grip, he tends to produce a hook when the clubhead of best muscle back irons is fully released. Having watched his swing on video, he knows he must prevent the clubhead from rotating through impact, if he wants to hit it long and straight. In other words, he knows his swing and the adjustments he needs to make when his swing brakes down.
Drive The Club With Your Body

Anthony Kim is a third story. He hits them long and straight off the tee by driving the club with his body, not the muscles of his arms. Kin has really mastered this. In addition, his swing with mp-58 irons is simple and fundamentally sound. It features an almost perfect sequence of movements, which helps him hit them longer and straighter-and he, like Maryuama, is not a big, strapping guy.

In essence, Kim builds torque by stretching his body against itself and unwinding it at just the right time, producing a sort of "cracking of the whip." In doing so, he exhibits many of the same swing with mizuno mp 58 attributes as Ben Hogan. Hogan, who also was rather small, drove the ball great distances. Like Kim, he created great clubhead speed and power by combining strength, flexibility, and great mechanics.
