Get Power from Your Driver (part1)

  In previous articles in the Golf School section we have covered the basic requirements of what a Plane is and how to stay upon it, as well as a brief look at Clubface Control. In this article we will examine one of the critical power areas, that is lag, and what it does for us.

  I recently played a casual 9 holes around a WA public golf course with a good mate and student of mine. We lined up at the 1st tee wishing we had slipped the starter a few bucks to bump us to the front, when my student grinned and said, “That guy lost his entire lag with his fishing rod. He was cooked before he even started.”

  It is a common fault, players trying so hard from the top of their swing with pivots all akimbo but the loss of club head lag early in the swing means even, and if, they make it back to the ball, it is hit with a powder puff. If Fig 1 and or Fig 2 look familiar then read on carefully. Figure 3 is where we need to get to. So let us work backward from the ball so that we know what we have to do to have a hammer rather than cosmetics.

  From previous articles we know that we must arrive at the ball with the right forearm on plane so that the shaft is best supported by our bent right wrist and the forearm can deliver the mass of our driving right shoulder most efficiently. A side on view of a golfer (Fig 3) who plays with lag even at impact shows the hands lead the PING G15 Driver head until after the ball has left the building.

  Many would head to the dictionary but I took a detour to a Thesaurus which held some interesting analogies for lag. “Be late, slowness and amongst others, follow.” In terms of our golf swing these verbal definitions are the most visually profound. Our hands have to be in a position for the entire golf stroke to produce, load and maintain lag. So first of all we need to work out how to produce this lag from the beginning of a swing.

  So where does lag come from? First of all we need to load the club shaft, meaning we need to get some power into the PING G15 Driver shaft and our body machine. As we take the club away in the backswing, you will notice that some small level of force is required to shift the PING G15 Driver head from its resting place. This feeling of inertia is normally dealt with by most golfers by bending the right wrist a little more to ’flick’ it into motion and from there the plane is then sought, as shown in Fig 4. The feeling of inertia can also be termed as drag as illustrated in Fig 5 with a towel. In effect we wish to lift the golf shaft up plane with our right arm bending thus lifting the club up. Drag is still felt as we lift the PING G15 Driver but it is much more gradual than the flick lift as in Fig 6.

FIRST AID FOR SLICERS

First aid for this is initially to get the ball set up correctly and to learn the correct left hand motion. But because the hand action has been opening in the past, we need to learn to have them closing as opposed to opening during contact. Now I stress this is Driver First Aid, and I would not teach this to a student with a driver but rather with an iron. Yet I know many of you out there hit the range, and 75% of balls you hit are with your PING G15 Driver.

So tee up your PING G15 Driver on a tall tee. Get set up with the ball forward in the correct near low point slot, and then open the clubface as though you are going to hit it out of bounds way to the right. Now make a swing with the purpose of hitting it straight. If you managed to hit the ball anywhere near straight, you have just managed to learn how to close the clubface. If it has gone to the right then your left hand is not closing the face. Most players grasp this pretty quickly and after a few shots can go back to aiming straight. Try it, and you may see a little draw at first but certainly not a huge slice anymore.

To tame a PING G15 Driver in the long run you will need to build the foundations of your shorter swings solidly. That too is where you work out which parts of the swing are causing the problems and tackle them one at a time – over time. If your ball position is inconsistent, then it will be harder to isolate issues. Fix that first. Keep ball position consistent. Then watch your ball flight, and you can work out what the club face is doing.

Famous G20 Driver

Ping is an American brand of high-quality golf equipment, as well as one of the largest of the remaining American manufacturers of golf clubs, based in Phoenix, Arizona, founded by Karsten Solheim, who was an engineer at the General Electric Company. In 1959, he started making his own putters in his garage in Redwood City, California. In 1967, because of increasing demand for his putters, he resigned his job at General Electric in order to fully develop the Ping Company. Both have the stock shafts. It is just my observations.

Ping Driver g15 vs g10

  Ping designed its line of G10 and G15drivers with almost matching specifications in size (460 cc), shape and wall thickness of the club face. Both clubs are designed to promote accuracy and forgiveness, making them ideal for golfers of all skill sets. With all these similarities, you might think that the two clubs are identical, but there is one main difference between the two that makes the G15 slightly longer off the tee. That difference comes in the way the club heads are weighted.

  All the compares are done on the Ping Man. G15 is +6 yrds longer on center hits and an average of +10 yards longer on off center hits. G10 was a great driver, but G15 is looking to be much better. Some amazing stat's on mishits. G15 is really forgiving from reports. I just got mine today and will compare to my Rapture V2 and a G10 I had a year ago. The Rapture V2 is amazing and I've heard/read the G15 is comparable distance wise and maybe even more forgiving.

  Previously owned a G10 10.5* with TFC129D Regular and recently demoed a G15 10.5* with TFC149D Regular. Found the G15 to be longer off the tee and noticeably more forgiving. The TFC149D shaft, despite it's high torque rating (Reg = 5.8*), seemed to work quite well with the G15 head. Would have liked to try the lower torque (4.0*) Serrano shaft option, but one was not available. IMHO, the G15 is a worthy replacement for the G10.

I only have one round with the G15 and I was swinging not so great but did manage to hit a couple nice drives.

Between these 2. For my 95 Mph swing. The G15 is longer. It is a improvement over the G10. A huge difference? Maybe. Depends how you define huge. I will say either one of these drivers I could play for the next couple years and be happy. It just seems that on mishits I ended up farther down the fairway than I thought, with the G15 that is. It seems to be sneaky long. But that could have more to do with the shafts. Launch is about the same, I think spin is a lower with the G15. I was getting some decent roll.

Ping G15 Irons

When you are setting up to a "classic" iron, what kinds of thoughts run through your mind? For me, I imagine the silky smooth feel of the sweet spot. I visualize the ball curving through the air at will. I can almost see the ball falling to the green with just enough spin to bounce twice and then stop. However, put a blade in another player's hands and the reaction could be entirely different. The oversized club heads, made of high quality investment cast 17-4 stainless steel, feature a redesigned "Custom Tuning Port" to provide enhanced feel, increased perimeter weighting and a higher moment of inertia. Additional weight has been placed at the toe and around the perimeter to provide increased forgiveness on off-center hits, and the G15's wider soles and lowered, rearward-placed center of gravity combine to help to produce higher trajectories. The lofts have also been strengthened by one degree from predecessor sets like the PING G10 irons, and you can probably expect to hit a six-iron (for example) three to five yards longer (as well as higher) than the six-iron you're using now.

The game-improvement G15 irons are high-launch and forgiving, making them a great option for beginners and tour pros alike. In designing the Custom Tuning Port behind the clubface we saved weight, which went to the perimeter for added stability and forgiveness.

According to the launch monitor, my launch angle was actually higher with the G15s than the G10s. Honestly, I thought I was losing it. I thought perhaps that my swing was changing and I was biased. After randomly grabbing three other golfers to hit each of the clubs using the launch monitor I found that they were having the same results. In fact, the highest handicap player had nearly a three-degree increase in trajectory with the G15s.

So far, PING had kept its promise: there was a better feel and there was an increase in distance. But how can you dramatically improve a club that you had just a few years back claimed was the "maximum" forgiveness iron? Well, PING did.

If you need a maximum game-improvement iron, consider the PING G15 irons. They felt silky-smooth and definitely helped me launch the ball higher, with a slight increase in distance, too. Low-handicap players, on the other hand, might be put off by the extra-wide soles and the lack of workability. These clubs go straight just about no matter what you do.

    As we know, Ping G15 Driver is a 460cc titanium driver meant for golfers seeking maximum forgiveness. Compared with the G10, G15 has numerous technological improvements. It attains a higher MOI by lengthening the head from front to back. Additionally, a 7% larger face increases ball speed and provides consistency across the entire hitting surface. Lastly, weight savings from the ultra thin crown are positioned as an external sole weight to optimize the center of gravity for higher trajectories and reduced spin. Additional backweighting and a more elongated face shore up misses. (Ping "shaved" the head in the low toe area to meet the 460cc size limit.) The reconfigured clubhead — 5 percent higher moment of inertia on heel or toe hits — combines with a light, 45.75-inch "high-balance point" shaft (TFC 169D or TFC 169D Tour) to boost clubhead speed and, thus, distance. Specifically, the TFC 169D shaft has more flexible tip and butt sections for softer feel. In total, G20 launches shots 0.75 degrees higher than G15, with 200 rpm less spin and 1 mph faster ball speed on center hits, which adds up to five yards more carry and roll.
